Difference between IE8's New Window and New Session
Many people do not notice the difference between "New Window"
and "New Session" under the "File" menu in Internet Explorer 8 (IE 8).
When you click File -> New Window (or Ctrl - N, or click the IE short-cut on
Start Menu) of IE 8, a new window will be created. However, this new
window will share the same session information with the original window.
In other words, if the original window is logged in to your web mail (e.g.
hotmail), you do not need to log in again to your web mail in the newly created
window.
When you click File -> New Session, a new session window will be created.
This new window will not use any information from the original window. In
other words, even if the orginal window is logged in to your web mail (e.g.
hotmail), you still need to log in again to your web mail in the newly created
window.
After you browse a secure web site (e.g. bank) with your log in information, you
should use the logout button provided by that secure web site to log out.
Do not just close the browser by clicking the "cross" on the right top corner.
This practice is particularly important if you often share a computer with other
users. It is because new version of IE keeps your log in information in
the session until you log out manually or the session is timeout (i.e. you do
not use the browser for several minutes).
